The Virginia Attorney General labeled a small business in Virginia an “imminent threat” because they did not follow various mandates regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, but the courts ruled in favor of the small business (Lanum, 2021). This type of attack against small businesses must stop – it is not right to the small business community and it adversely impacts our economy. The overly burdensome regulations, additional costs, and attacks on small businesses must come to an end.

Sadly, this is not the only battle small businesses must fight; there are discussions and plans to terminate the 20% small business standard tax deduction, raise the tax pass-through tax rate, raise the minimum wage, and much, much more (Lanum, 2021). Rather than theorizing how a policy might work at a theoretical level, those writing policies and regulations should consult with small business owners to see what works for them. Yes, it is wise and common sense to operate safely, but it is also wise and common sense to avoid implementing burdensome and unnecessary regulations and adding unwarranted costs to small businesses. This is particularly true coming of a very difficult year for small businesses.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, they employ a huge portion of our economy, and they are essential to our communities across the country. Why are small businesses so frequently the subject of increased yet unnecessary regulation and attacks, such as the one mentioned above? Why are small businesses not consulted for various economic and business-related policy decisions? This must change and it must change now. Rather than treating small businesses as pawns, threats, or any other degrading concept, policymakers should view small businesses the same way local communities do: a vitally important resource that feeds our economy with the nutrition it needs – jobs, commerce, and support. May we all stand with our small business brethren!
